Isuca

Published by:

Isuca is a show from the Winter 2015 season. If you blinked then you probably missed it since it was only 10 episodes long. The story revolves around a high school student named Shinichiro, who gets a job as a housekeeper for one of his classmates in order to pay his rent. While cleaning, he accidently breaks a vase which had a monster sealed inside of it. His classmate that he works for is the head of a family who exorcises and eliminates these creatures so he reluctantly becomes an assistant in capturing this monster.

This show mainly revolves around the relationships of the characters while trying to build a background and chasing monsters also. Unfortunately it’s hard to get all that into 10 episodes. Shinichiro (guess it was a popular name for Winter 2015, see Parasyte) is a typical high school boy with nothing that stands out about him Continue reading

Nekomonogatari (Kuro)

Published by:

Nekomonogatari actually takes place BEFORE Bakemonogatari and Nisemongatari. This is the origin story of Hanekawa. You see part of here story in Bakemonogatari but here is where that story gets fleshed out. As you know by now if you saw Bakemonogatari or Nisemonogatari, Hanekawa is a talker so if you don’t speak Japanese get ready for fast reading or possibly rewinding, she can push the dialogue along quick.

They main characters in Nekomonogatari are Koyomi, Hanekawa, Oshino and Shinobu. You learn more about the origin and background of the 4 characters and also about Black Hanekawa which is the cat like entity that you may have seen in pictures. I don’t want to give too much info here since this series gives you a lot of background. I’m sure you’ve probably seen plenty of gifs of her looking like a harmless catgirl but this cat has some serious claws. Continue reading

Nisemonogatari

Published by:

This is a continuation of the story of Bakemonogatari, with the main focus being on Koyomi’s sisters, also known as the Fire Sisters. A swindler comes to town, the same one who indirectly put the curse on Nadeko in Bakemonogatari and the sisters are out to stop him.

Nisemonogatari deals a lot more with character growth and interpersonal relationships. It even gets really incesty and it’s not just one time, it’s both of his sisters on a few occasions. It isn’t some long drawn out act or sex, it’s probably what you would call odd foreplay or fetish stuff. I’m not sure how to describe it but don’t go thinking I’m referring to sex, the show does not go that far. I’m really not sure what words to use, it’s just awkward. Continue reading

Bakemonogatari

Published by:

Bakemonogatari was an anime I just picked up randomly and I’m kind of glad I did. Though this show is hard for me to describe, it’s very eclectic, avant garde and surreal. There are so many aspects to this show that if I went through every nuance, this review would be a mile long.

Koyomi Araragi is the center of the show, a third year high school student who has recently was recently cured of his vampirism. He finds himself mixed up with all kinds of apparitions, ghosts, myths, and spirits of the female persuasion. Koyomi ends up being the one to help them with their issues inside themselves from emotional issues to passing on to the other side. Continue reading

Devil Survivor 2: The Animation (Debiru Sabaibā Tsū Ji Animēshon)

Published by:

What is justice? What is evil? What is a friend? Do humans deserve the right to live? Who should have the right to determine the fate of the world? Sounds a little like Evangelion or Freezing doesn’t it. Well these are questions that must be answered in Devil Survivor 2. This show has some similarities to other shows and I’m usually not one to compare like this but I got the same feeling watching this, that I got from those shows. Those shows are Evangelion, Freezing, Deadman Wonderland, Durarara and these are some of my favorite shows which must be why the show pulled me in so quick. When I saw the name I thought it was a horrible name but I ended up watching the whole thing in a night.

Japan finds itself at a crossroads, when mysterious invaders known as Septentriones being to descend on their country. The invasion of the Septentriones is more of a test of the human race than anything else.  Continue reading

Invaders of the Rokujyōma!? (Rokujōma no Shinryakusha!??)

Published by:

Koutarou Satomi is a high student who decided to live on his own. He settled on Apartment 106 at Corona House mainly because the price. 5000 yen, which is roughly $42. If I found an apartment for that price, I’d be tempted too. But as Koutarou soon finds out, there is a reason that Room 106 is so cheap.

Apartment 106 is cursed amongst other things. Koutarou finds himself in a battle with a young cutesy ghost, an incompetent witch, a voluptuous shrine maiden and others for control of Apartment 106. Each one has their reason for wanting the apartment and none are willing to back down in their pursuit. This leads to an interesting arrangement where Koutarou and the girls end up sharing the apartment until they can settle who gets the apartment. Continue reading

So I Decided to Check Out Some of the New Shows.

Published by:

I decided to check out some of the new shows to see what’s going on. The industry has given way to a lot of crap shows lately and then someone brought up Spring previews over on one of the main anime sites. I don’t know what to think with some of the sites because the attitudes of some people, acting like they’re gods or something. I can’t stand diva attitudes or “I’m better than everybody” attitudes and sometimes that attitude seeps into their reviews so I’m almost never sure if I should even listen to them, not that I really do anyway. That’s why I decided to take a look for myself and see what’s out there.

Is It Wrong to Pickup Girls in a Dungeon – Will definitely keep watching this one. Looks like it has the potential to be another Log Horizon or Sword Art Online. Of course they could screw it up and it ends up being a lame 12 episode show Continue reading

Squid Girl (Shinryaku! Ika Musume)

Published by:

Squid Girl is a girl from the ocean who happens to have tentacles for hair. She came to invade the land and get revenge for the inhabitants of the sea, for all the pollution over the years. Her first goal is to take over a beach side restaurant so she has a base of operations but she doesn’t find it that easy to carry out her plans.

This is where Squid Girl meets the Aizawa sisters, Eiko and Chizuru. They’re the other main characters of the show as you can pretty much tell by the picture to the left. Squid Girl runs into Eiko as she tries to “terrorize” the restaurant. She tries to show what she can do with her tentacles, while trying to swat a mosquito, and ends up breaking a hole in the restaurant wall. This incident causes Eiko to enlist her as a waitress to pay off the debt. This begins Squid Girl’s life on land, learning new things and becoming a part of the human civilization. Continue reading

When It Comes to Reviews…

Published by:

When it comes to reviews, it can be a blessing and a curse. You can review some quality stuff, people try it out and they like it too. Or you can review something just horrible and people thank you for saving them the trouble. But then you have the gray area where you review something and people don’t agree. Not everyone thinks the same so I’m fine with that, if you disagree with me then let’s talk and have a discussion as long as it’s something you go into with an open mind.

One thing that makes the job a bit more difficult is when you review something, like it and then change your mind later. It usually happens when I do game reviews. When I do these anime reviews they stay kind of static. I do game reviews over on OUYAForum.com and sometimes a game is great out the box but after a while things change. Like it can be great one day then the next you’re sitting there calling it crap. That comes with repetition though, not something that can really be helped, if you have tiramisu everyday then sooner or later you will want something else.

There are also times where I give a game a good review and for some reason the developer doesn’t like it. This is a weird one for me, if I give you a good review then why have an issue? That’s the way I look at it, if someone said they like my game or other product then why would I have an issue with that. Yet they’ll kiss up to someone who gives a bad review or is destructive in what they say. It makes no sense to me but it is what it is I guess.

Another thing with reviews is trying to give people a review and thoughts without making it so long they get bored halfway through and also not giving spoilers. For me, I’d rather know what you think and that’s it, not all the fluff and crap added, not just extra type so you can see your words take over a screen. Give me a review and let me make the decision if I want to continue or not. I feel like a review should be more like a preview unless the goal is to give a full synopsis of the project.

I hope that’s the same way when my projects are out and someone does a review. No spoilers, no extra long winded reviews just to say “I like it” or “I hate it”.  I’ve actually targeted people who I’d like doing reviews of my stuff, these are people who I know will give an honest and unbiased opinion while being constructive if there is any criticism. Obviously there will be others who will do their own reviews and that’s great but the only thing I ask for is be fair just like I will be to you.

Sure it can be a tough line to walk because as a developer, I will also be reviewed and I’m sure someone will do something out of spite or “revenge” in their minds. That’s why I was unsure at first about doing reviews but it’s a review and my thoughts, not someone else’s. I’d rather be helping someone along than trying to destroy what they’re trying to do and anyone who has had conversations with me knows that. If there is something I can help with, I’ll help. You never know, there may be a day when you’re the one who needs that help.

Maybe it’s just me, who knows. Maybe I’m just a different kind of cat.

I’m out.
