Elfen Lied (Erufen Rīto)

Published by:

Elfen Lied, one of the most controversial animes yet I’m not sure it should be. There are shows that are more gory than Elfen Lied but for it’s time, it was pretty bad but in a good way.

Elfen Lied is a very brutal psychological horror. A specimen known as a Diclonius breaks out of a lab and winds up losing her memory. She’s found by two teenagers who end up taking care of her. Diclonii are a human like being with horns, they also have telekenetic invisible arms, known as vectors, which seem to be used for mostly killing since it’s in their nature. This specific Diclonius has lost her memory and ends up with a split personality. Sometimes she is docile and cute and other times she’s a brutal killing machine. With the people from the lab and others looking for her, it leads to a lot of chaotic incidents. Continue reading

Punch Line (Panchi Rain)

Published by:

When I first saw the previews of the show, I thought it would be drek. It came off as trying to keep some kid from seeing a girl’s panties but that’s not all the show is about. Is it part of it though.

Yuta lives in an apartment complex with four girls. One day following a busjacking, Yuta finds himself ejected from his own body and is now left to roam the Earth as a spirit. Yuta encounters a cat spirit named Chiranosuke who becomes his sensei in a sense. Chiranosuke is teaching Yuta how to use his spirit powers so that he can protect the girls from the situations they find themselves in. Yuta’s only problem is that if he sees panties TWICE then the Earth will be destroyed by a meteor. Continue reading

Kanokon

Published by:

Kanokon is one of the links that came up on the side of Youtube while I was watching something else. I had no idea what it was but I figured why not see what it is. Some day I have to go to a Japanese school and see if the wimpy kid really does get the hot girl.

Kouta, is a country boy who lived with his grandfather, but recently moved to the city to attend high school. Of course there are changes moving from the country to the city but nothing could have prepared the him for Chizuru, a beautiful fox spirit who wants him in the worst way. But not only Chizuru is after him, there’s also a wolf spirit too who’s just as enamored with him. This leads to other supernatural events and life for Kouta gets much more chaotic. Continue reading

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (When They Cry)

Published by:

Don’t let the cutesy cover pic fool you, this show is brutal. That’s probably why they had to go with cutesy cover art. It’s not the most brutal show I’ve ever seen or anything but the killing is definitely hardcore. The show looks like it’ll be a moe show but it’s not, trust me.

The show is about a little town that seems to be where several murders have happened, brutal murders. You go on a ride for 6 different arcs but they go in reverse. When you realize it, the first arc may actually be the last arc. Some of it isn’t totally clear in some arcs but as you go through the episodes, you get more and more clues which fills in holes. Nichijou

Published by:

Nichijou supposedly means everyday but if this is someone’s everyday life then I want in. When do you see a principal actually German suplex a deer or an over enthusiastic hall monitor with a gatling gun or a guy who acts like a rich kid who rides a goat to school and has a butler with him or a girl flipping a goat. If someone gets to live this everyday then I’ll gladly go back to school just to watch the ridiculousness unfold.

The show is similar to Chronicles of the Going Home Club in a lot of ways. It’s a comedy show with some seriously ridiculous situations that will leave you laughing, shaking your head or saying “WTF.” There are a few normal-ish situations but most are not. The situations here aren’t as fast paced though, you don’t end up rewinding to read subtitles or anything like that. It also has elements of the Monogatori series with quick scene changes and title cards plus some abstract styling. Continue reading

The Seven Deadly Sins (Nanatsu no Taizai)

Published by:

The Seven Deadly Sins is another in a long line of recent fantasy based animes. Since I’ve been watching Is It Wrong to Pickup Girls in the Dungeon?, I decided to check out a few of the others. Log Horizon is one on my list but I’ve been looking for the shorter shows like this. Log Horizon will take a big time investment but I’ll get around to it. For me, this genre comes right behind the mystery/thriller genre which you should know I’m a big fan of by now.

The show revolves around a group of knights known as the Seven Deadly Sins. They disbanded after they supposedly plotted to overthrow the Kingdom. They were thwarted by the Holy Knights but the rumors are that they still exist. Ten years later, the Holy Knights planned a coup and captured the king to become the new rulers of the land. Princess Elizabeth set out on a quest to find the Seven Deadly Sins. Continue reading

Kill la Kill

Published by:

Before watching Kill la Kill, I didn’t hear much about it. I knew the name but never heard the story or anything like that. Then it popped up on Toonami so I set it to DVR and watched. This show has been a controversial one amongst fans and haters.

The story revolves around Ryuko, a girl who is on a quest to find her father’s killer. She’s a high school student at Honnouji Academy where all the students fight for supremacy. The reason they fight is for Satsuki, the one running the school. Satsuki rules with an iron fist and she’s believed to be the one who killed Ryuko’s father. Ryuko has to get through Satsuki’s Elite Four if she is going to face her and possibly avenge her father’s death. Continue reading

Dragon Ball Super

Published by:

Dragon Ball Super is coming July 5th. Who knew that after 18 years, we would get a new series. Most people thought the show was done long ago. The Battle of the Gods movie showed just how much people were waiting for something new from Dragon Ball Z. Resurrection of F really put the series back on the map since it brought back the most famous/infamous enemy of the whole series, Frieza. It debuted in the US in a solo showing in Los Angeles a few days before it’s full official release in Japan and will be in theatres in the US with a solo showing on July 2nd at one of the conventions and then full release in August. Saekano – How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend (Saenai Heroine no Sodatekata)

Published by:

The title alone got my attention. I was sitting there thinking, how do you have a boring girlfriend. Obviously if she’s your girlfriend then she wouldn’t be boring, right? Isn’t that how it works? Well I guess there are some people who go for that kind of thing.

The main character, Tomoya works to fund his otaku lifestyle and during his spring vacation he comes across a girl who can be described as beautiful BUT there is one caveat, she’s lacks personality. The girl is actually a classmate, one who is hardly noticed by anyone. She’s nothing like his 2D girls from the visual novels and dating sims. Megumi has the look he’s seeking for a visual novel so he recruits her to be the “heroine” in the game. The show follows the adventure of Tomoya, Megumi, Eriri and Utaha as they come together to make a visual novel to show at Comiket. Continue reading

Another Pitch for Oni Press

Published by:

I haven’t mentioned this other pitch much because it was meant to be a light novel at first. Not sure when the idea popped in my head but I asked someone who read the sample stuff I had and he thought it would work. I asked 2 of the others who read it and they think so too. So Mr Killswitch will be submitting Dodge Battle High to Oni Press also. I only have 10 days to get the package together so have to get on that ASAP. I should be able to bang out the comic scripting quick, it’s the summary and cover letter that seem to be tripping me up. So I guess I will have 2 pitches and hopefully 2 books getting published.

Dodge Battle High is a story about dodgeball but not in the traditional sense. You will have your regular schools but Dodge Battle High is a school where dodgeball determines a high percentage of your grade. It’s a slice of life/comedy type book but it will also deal with subjects like death, self esteem, friendship and more.

If I had this idea earlier, I might have even pitched my 3rd idea but that’ll be for the next open submissions at Oni Press. Well, time to get crackin.
