Dodge Battle High

Published by:

Yes this is the name of the pitch I sent to Oni Press during their submissions process (also Astra Etherium which was turned down though I think it fits their line of books also). I haven’t given many details to those outside of the few who read my scribbles from when it was going to be a light novel. A few have seen my comic scripted version which has a decent amount of pages now. I have the first 100 pages or so in my head and need to put about 55 more of it on paper and script it.

Comic scripting is definitely not as easy as someone would think it is. You have to picture each frame and describe it so that someone reading it can picture it in their head or draw it if it’s an artist. I used to draw comics as a teen with Marvel on my mind but I would sketch my stories then draw. I stopped drawing like 15 years ago so my skill has diminished a bit and I’m much more of a perfectionist now which causes me to not finish art, plus the fact that I never learned to do it all digitally.

The book will be a mix of sports (dodgeball), family, slice of life but also tackle some topics like death, loneliness, and other psychological things that teens go through. Don’t worry, it’s comedy and light hearted for the most part so you won’t want to sit in a dark room wishing your life was over. Even the sports part probably won’t be as pronounced as the interpersonal relationships. The relationships whether good or bad will be the main focus of the books.

Where do I see this going? Well I would like to cover their 4 years in high school for the series which would mean 20 books or so and if it’s really popular then I have plans for the next set of books where they have graduated but I won’t let you know about that part yet. I also would like to see this adapted into a show. I think it would lend itself well to an adaptation and I may look to form my own “production committee” for funding. I’m even thinking if maybe the characters will be put into this dodgeball game concept that I have had for a while but I’m currently in gamedev hell so I have to wait before I think of that part but also a possibility.

I now return you to your regularly scheduled blog stuff.

Oni Press Still Hasn’t Rejected My 2nd Pitch…Yet

Published by:

Well I’ve been sitting and waiting for a rejection letter but nothing yet. I’m on day 62. They extended the response time from 30 days to 60 but I know one person said it took 72 days. I’m debating what to do with Dodge Battle High because I made a few changes to what I sent them. What if they get back to me and say “we want your book”?

I’m still looking at a Kickstarter but it may be around October. By then, I should have a clear answer on Astra Etherium (the game) which is being held up by external issues beyond my control and I’m not happy about. I will probably send Astra Etherium (the book) to Dark Horse. It’s probably more their thing but I heard they ask for a piece of film rights or something in their deals. Which can be good and bad. I’d like to see it hit the anime market but if a movie can be made then why not. It lends itself well to a movie.

So I just keep writing, hoping it’s good…the few who read it say that it is. Hope they aren’t telling me what they think I want to hear…

Ugh. I guess I just want to know what’s going on in the process.

**Update** I guess someone heard me. I got an email today saying they need longer than the 60 days. It looks like about 2 weeks ago they still had 950 submissions to go through so I guess there is still hope before having to turn to Kickstarter.

FLCL (Fooly Cooly)

Published by:

When I was doing my writeup on Photon, I checked my other writeups and didn’t realize I never did one for FLCL. I can think of several good reasons why I probably didn’t but we’ll get to that later.

FLCL is a 6 part OVA based around a kid in 6th grade who is the typical kid with hormones. Naota and his brother’s ex-girlfriend were fooling around when all of a sudden a crazy girl on a scooter runs him over and cracks him with a guitar. On top of that, the misery doesn’t end for Naota, this ill mannered girl who tried to give him brain damage, moved into his house. His slackass father acts like it’s just normal and okay for this to happen. The crazy one claims to be an alien and even moves into Naota’s bedroom, while putting him front and center into some secret agenda of a mega corporation. Sounds like it would be interesting right? Picked up a Ford Expedition

Published by:

Yeah so I picked up one of these. Was a good deal so couldn’t pass it up. Unfortunately I cracked a torsion bar somehow and just waiting for a new part to get here. Already replacing suspension parts and whatnot because I don’t want it to ride like some fancy ass rich guy car. I want it to ride like an SUV is meant to ride.

There is some rust under it because it’s a 2000 and not religiously taken care of but I plan to rehab all that. Already started replacing some things and I want to sandblast it and do a full undercoat painting.  Pretty much planned to make it run like new and ride ’til the wheels fall off. Someone actually said something about getting a car for $10,000 and not having to do all that. Why would I do all that when for $2500 this thing will be on the road and driving like it’s brand new. I guess some people are rich and throw money around.

So yeah, adding another title to my list of growing jobs. General contractor, game developer, graphic novel writer, manga writer, mechanic and body repair. That’s probably leaving out a few things like appliance and TV repair which I have done recently. Fixed the oven for $15 and TV for $20. Better than paying $500 and $1000.

The pic is actually of another one but mine is just like it except different bumpers. I should actually take pics…

The Rolling Girls (Rōringu Gāruzu)

Published by:

When I first heard about the show it was just blurbs and loglines and whoever did that marketing did a good job. They had me wanting to watch. After watching it…well read the rest of this post.

The premise of the story is that there was a “Great Tokyo War” which rocked Japan 10 years ago. All the political and economic power has vanished. Since this happened, each of the 10 prefectures split into independent “states” that compete with each other. Vigilantes from the war became known as “Best” and they represent their prefectures, then they have supporters that are called “Rest”, kind of like a mob. The Rest are supporters who help maintain peace.

After one of the Best battles, Masami is left badly injured. One of the Rest named Nozomi decides to travel Japan on motorcycle with her friends to fulfill requests Continue reading

Seraph of the End (Owari no Serafu)

Published by:

Seraph of the End is a show from the past spring season which actually brought us some very good shows. This was indeed one of them even though it took a while to build up to the action. Seraph really does start off slow. At first it looked like it was going to be sparkling vampires and BL all over the place. It does take a few episodes to see where they’re going in terms of direction of the show and that’s probably because they knew they had a second season coming.

The actual story is about a ravaged Earth that was destroyed in 2012 by a human made virus that killed anyone over the age of 13. This leads to the uprising of the vampires. They come from the depths of the Earth to take control of most of the planet and offer “protection” to survivors. That “protection” comes at a price, they have to give their blood to the vampires who need it to survive. Yuichiro and Mikaela plan to escape to the outside world but in their attempt, Mikaela is caught and sacrifices himself so Yuichiro can escape. Yuichiro has since vowed revenge on the vampires for killing his “family” and now has backup to help accomplish that goal. Continue reading

Yuru Yuri

Published by:

What can I say to describe Yuru Yuri. Cute girls doing cute things with lots of yuri undertones? Sounds about right. It’s probably a little Lucky Star mixed with Sakura Trick.

Yuru Yuri is about a group of middle school girls who have deep childhood bonds and they form an after school club. The club is just them having fun but this is where you start to see the yuri undertones. The 4 girls have friends in the student council and a few others who they interact with. Within the group there are some girls who like other girls but don’t know how to say it, some who know how to say it but get pushed away, and even some who fantasize about the other girls. But don’t expect this to go into hentai areas or anything like that. The show is very tame and it sticks mostly to the school activities, eating together, Comiket and things of that nature. When it comes to yuri action, it’s very innocent and nothing heavy. Not even sure I’d call it yuri. Continue reading

Labyrinth of Flames (Honoo no Labyrinth)

Published by:

When I saw this the first time, I thought it was the worst show ever. I watched it again more recently and… well… at least it’s not Kite but it’s still not very good.

The story is centered on a geeky Russian kid who wants to be a real samurai. By watching his actions you would think it’s an impossible dream. Then one day, his friend Natsu gives him an ancient sword that was in the custody of her family. When she hands him the sword, all types of strange people and things start appearing to try to take the sword from him. Galan has to overcome his geeky wanting to be a samurai to nut up and really become one if he wants to keep his head. Continue reading

Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki (Tenchi Muyō! Ryōōki)

Published by:

This is where it all started for the Tenchi series. Ryo-Ohki gives you the background for a lot of the future Tenchi series references. There are even other shows that take cues from Tenchi and vice versa. When it comes to harem shows in space, the Tenchi series is near the top.

Ryo-Ohki starts with a Tenchi who leads a quiet life helping his grandfather at the temple. His life would have remained quiet if he didn’t release a space pirate named Ryoko from her 700 year old prison. Ryoko ends up making Tenchi’s life a lot more interesting but she is only the beginning. An alien princess, another alien girl, a ditzy galaxy police agent and an insane scientist all join the party. Each of these females is after Tenchi for their own wants and desires and fight each other over him.

The madness doesn’t stop there Continue reading

Photon: The Idiot Adventures

Published by:

Photon is kind of like an off shoot of the Tenchi series. If you read up on Tenchi, you will find links to Photon on almost every page, as a show that’s similar. It has the same creator and also a lot of the terms and/or names are used some way in the Tenchi series. It’s most pronounce in Tenchi Muyo! War on Geminar.

The show is about a boy named Photon (bet you didn’t see that coming), who is sent on a quest to bring back Aun. Aun is a childhood friend from the same village who left on a journey to meet an idol she has a crush on. While on this quest, Photon saves Aun, ends up getting ‘married’ to a rebel space pilot, finds a long lost person who he seems to be in love with and gets to fight an evil wannabe galactic emperor plus an even bigger evil entity enters the fray. What more could you ask for in a 6 episode show?

Idiot Adventures can have a lot of meanings with this show. All the characters seem a little dumb in some way. Photon just seems “slow” but others are dumb. There is an energy called “Aho” and in the Kansai dialect it means idiot. Photon has “baka” written on his forehead which also means idiot. The people of Photon’s village regard a magic marker as a “Holy instrument” not realizing it’s just a marker. So there are a lot of references in the show to the lack of intelligence. People will probably think of FLCL as a comparison. I don’t see what others see in that show but this show is not like FLCL.
