Is This a Zombie? and Is This a Zombie? of the Dead (Kore wa Zonbi Desu ka?)

Published by:

Is This a Zombie is a hilarious 2 season comedy. Ayumu Aikawa is a zombie who was resurrected by a necromancer Eucliwood Hellscythe after being killed by a serial killer. As Ayumu starts learning to cope with being a zombie, he also becomes a Magical Garment Girl. Yes you read that right, he becomes a Magical Garment Girl and now has to battle demons…in a dress, while trying to find his killer. But the problems for Ayumu don’t stop there.

The first season is more of an action comedy. Ayumu and the girls are fighting demons, Megalos and others while Ayumu is trying to find his killer. It’s not all action though, a lot of the show takes place in Ayumu’s house and at school too. You get an up close look at Ayumu’s home life with a necromancer, Magical Garment Girl, a vampire ninja and his school life plus others who randomly appear.

The second season (Is This a Zombie? of the Dead) is more like a haremy comedy. So many bad innuendos, bad puns, bad jokes, movie references and other things Continue reading

Chaos Dragon: Sekiryuu Seneki

Published by:

Chaos Dragon seemed to be a very polarizing show for some reason though I have no idea why. The concept of Chaos Dragon is an intriguing one. It was based on a role playing project Red Dragon created by 5 notable character designers: Gen Urobochi (Fate/Zero), Kinoko Nasu (Kara no Kyoukai), Iduki Kougyoku (Mimizuku to Yoru no Ou), Ryohgo Narita (Durarara!!), and Simadoriru (member of the Stripe Pattern doujin circle). Over 6 days of game sessions they came up with enough material for a 7 volume light novel series.

The story of Chaos Dragon takes place in Huanli (the Year of Dazzling) 3015. There are 3 factions that are central to the story. There is an island country named Nil Kamui which has lost it’s independence and Donatia and Kouran are fighting for supremacy. This causes the area to be in constant strife. While all this is going on, Red Dragon, the guardian of Nil Kamui goes out of control. So while the island nation tries to regain it’s independence, they also have to deal with Red Dragon. Witch Craft Works (Witchikurafuto Wākusu)

Published by:

Honoka is a regular high school student who finds himself one of the most hated people in school and not by any fault of his own. It starts with him being seated next to the school’s most popular girl Ayaka. They never even spoke to each other before but one simple interaction between them, gets her fan club riled up. But that’s nothing compared to what happens to him after that. He finds himself saved from an attack, by a fire witch who happens to be Ayaka. They aren’t the only ones after Honoka either but Ayaka is there to save his ass. Honoka seems to be making more and more enemies that he didn’t even know were after him and Ayaka is there for him.

Honoka is a straight laced, regular, teenager who is getting used to being chased after but not for the usual harem-y reason. The show does feel kind of harem-y because they’re all after him but it’s not one. Ayaka on the other hand is like the queen. Everyone basically bows down to her, she has a fan club who worships her, and enemies who are jealous of her. She will be a hard character for some to like because she’s very much a kuudere. Kuuderes and danderes make very hard show leads because the silence of the personality. Continue reading

Birdy the Mighty (Tetsuwan Birdy)

Published by:

I saw this show way way back and remembered liking it. So when it came up as a random pick on one of the websites I watch anime on, I went back in.

An average middle school kid who is studying for his high school exams, runs into a man running from someone. Tsutomu is that average kid and in all the confusion, he accidentally gets killed by a space cop. That cop is named Birdy and she ends up saving him by unorthodox methods. She ends up sharing his body. Now Tsutomu and Birdy are stuck with each other and they have to hunt criminals and save lives together, while trying not to drive each other nuts. Continue reading

God Eater (Goddo Ītā)

Published by:

God Eater was one of my most anticipated shows. The artstyle drew me in right away and the promo video was pretty damned good too.

A few weeks ago, rumors started going around about the show only being 9 episodes. With all the delays and spacing out of the show, it’s kind of hard to think that it wouldn’t be cancelled mid season. In actuality, it’s just ending for now and will be back in the winter with 4 more episodes.

Anyway, the show is set in 2071 and most of the world has been destroyed by creatures known as the Aragami. A group known as Fenrir has been taking out these monsters with weapons that are known as God Arcs. These God Arcs aren’t ordinary weapons though, they’re made with cells from the Aragami. The ones who exterminate the Aragami are known as God Eaters. The God Eaters use either a projectile based God Arc or a sword based one. However, there is a new type of God Eater that can wield both. The show focuses on killing Aragami, protecting citizens and the usual things you do when the world is coming to an end. Continue reading

Gangsta (Gyangusuta)

Published by:

Gangsta was the one show that stood out to me from the summer schedule. It was just the name alone, Gangsta. By being “Gangsta” and not “Gangster”, you know it’s going to be different and not just the regular gangster stuff like racketeering though there is some of that stuff too.

The show is centered on two “Handymen” who take on jobs from the mob and also the police, that no one else can handle. Worick and Nicolas seem like they’ve been together for a long time in Ergastulum, a city full of mafia, hoods, prostitutes and dirty cops. Speaking of prostitutes, Alex, the woman you see with them, becomes a part of the team through unusual circumstances. Together they take on jobs, usually of the protection variety. There is more to the story than that but I’ll let you find that out on your own. Continue reading

Himouto! Umaru-chan

Published by:

I was going to pass on this show when I saw the first image released for it. It was hamstergirl surrounded by her games and all that and that to me was passable. But when people kept talking about her like she’s Hestia or something, I had to check out what the hell was going on.

This show is centered around Umaru (guess that was kind of obvious), a high school girl who lives with her older brother Taihei. When she’s at school, she is the model student but when she gets home, she puts on this hamster cape thing and turns into an unbearable, inconsiderate, lazy, good for nothing, ultra otaku. All the negatives that are said about otaku, is what she is. So it’s about her life at school and home with the people around her. Continue reading

Black Lagoon (Burakku Ragūn)

Published by:

Action, gunshots, more action, more gunshots, stuff blows up, more gunshots, KABOOM! Black Lagoon has action on top of action but is it the type of action you want to see?

Picture this. You’re Rokuro Okajima who works a 9-5 job though in Japan that might be more like 5am-9pm. You hate your job, your life and everything around you. Then you get kidnapped. Instead of trying to escape, you become part of the kidnappers group. You are now Rock the pirate. Continue reading

SHIMONETA: A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn’t Exist (Shimoneta to Iu Gainen ga Sonzai Shinai Taikutsu na Sekai)

Published by:

SHIMONETA is one that I picked up because the name alone seemed like it would be funny. Think about it, could you imagine a world where people didn’t tell dirty jokes? Even if you don’t like them, you have people who do, people who make it like their sole purpose. It’s like the Star Trek analogy. Could you live in a world where everyone is the same?

It’s been 16 years since the “Law for Public Order and Morals in Healthy Child-Raising” was passed. This law bans crude language and sexual material in Japan. Tanukichi Okuma enrolls in the country’s leading school in public morals but he is soon invited into the Anti-Societal Organization named SOX, by it’s founder Ayame Kajou. As a member of SOX, Tanukichi is forced to take part in obscene acts seen as terrorism, going against the student council which is helmed by a girl he has a crush on, the uptight council president Anna. Everyday Life with Monster Girls (Monsutā Musume no Iru Nichijō)

Published by:

I had no clue what to expect with this one. From the stuff I read ahead of time, the premise was a guy who had to live with a monster girl and adjust his way of life to accomodate her. But that isn’t the whole story. At that time the only pictures available for preview had Miia and Kimihito who are the main characters.

So the Japanese government was keeping a big secret. Creatures thought to be mythical like centaurs and harpies are actually real. Three years before the start of the story, Japan passed a bill called the “Interspecies Cultural Exchange Act”. Now these creatures known as liminals are allowed to be part of human society, sort of like exchange students but they have stricter rules and regulations against them. Humans and liminals can’t harm each other or mate or face long jail sentences.

Kimihito didn’t volunteer to be part of the program but a scared and embarassed Miia was delivered to his doorstep by Ms. Smith, by mistake. Kimihito didn’t have the heart to send her away and they started living together. As the story progresses, more and more liminals come in contact with Kimihito, whether it’s by accident, on purpose or otherwise and he ends up houses them all whether by choice or not, mostly not by choice.
