Puella Magi Madoka Magica (Mahō Shōjo Madoka Magika)

Published by:

Puella Magi Madoka Magica? Really dawg? You watched that? Yes, yes I did…one of the sites that does top ten lists had this list of gruesome murders and it was on it so I had to see what happened. I will say that the murder was pretty brutal so I have to go find that site and thank them.

On the face of this one, you would think it’s just a shiny magical girl show but it’s not. Trust me, it’s not. It starts off looking like one but this show is much much darker than that. Where else would you see magical girls using guns or trying to kill each other? The magical girl game is getting hardcore. Don’t take that for the whole show being like that, it’s not an action show for the most part. It does have it’s girly girly moments too but there was a lot that I didn’t expect from this one. A lot.

Gunplay that would rival some serious action shows.

Madoka is a middle school student who along with her friend Sayaka, encounter a creature known as Kyubey. This creature offers to make a contract with them to be magical girls but a transfer student named Homura stops Madoka from forming the contract. Along the way, Madoka and Sayaka meet another magical girl named Mami who brings them along on witch hunts so they can see what being a magical girl is about. Madoka learns quickly that it’s a pretty cruel lifestyle filled with danger, anguish, suffering and even death. This is only the beginning od the journey for Madoka, Sayaka and Homura. School Live! (Gakkō Gurashi!)

Published by:

I was passing on this show until someone said it had a Higurashi vibe and Higurashi is a show that I liked. I was planning to watch most of the summer season anyway since I had a lot of free time but this might have gotten pushed back if someone didn’t say that.

Yuki Takeya is a bright cheery girl who loves school in every way imaginable. Yuki is part of the School Living Club at her high school with Kurumi, Yuri, Miki and a teacher who is affectionately known as Megu-nee though she repeatedly asks them not to call her that since she is their their and they should be calling her sensei. Yuki seeks out fun things to do at school while they’re ‘living’ there. The other girls work hard to keep her safe because the reality of it all is that they’re seemingly the sole survivors of a zombie outbreak. Continue reading

Danganronpa the Animation

Published by:

Danganronpa, a name that a lot of people know from visual novels. I have never touched visual novels so I wasn’t familiar with it but 16 people locked in a classroom/school who have to kill each other? What’s not to like, right?

16 students get locked in a school by an anonymous figure with one goal. Survive. The students are told that only one of them gets to survive and everyone else dies. These students aren’t killers and don’t want to kill each other so it makes for a philosophical debate. To kill or not to kill. Continue reading

Alice in Borderland (Imawa no Kuni no Alice)

Published by:

Alice in Borderland starts with a group of high school kids about to leave high school. Alice (yes it’s his name) is trying to avoid thinking about the future, so are his friends Karube and Chota. One night when they’re together they see a bright explosion in the sky and find themselves transported to a desolate territory.

This desolate new land they find themselves in is no ordinary place, as they eventually find out. In this new world, they are forced to play games of survival. Not just ordinary and not just survival as in last man standing. This is life or death. If they get hurt in the game, they are hurt for real, if they die in the game…you get the picture. Will they survive long enough to get to the end of the game? Will there be hard choices they have to make? I can tell you this, the show is pretty brutal. Continue reading

Deadman Wonderland

Published by:

I was late to the party on Deadman Wonderland. I caught it when it was on Toonami but realized it was partially censored so I sought out the uncensored version. It’s not THAT much different but different enough.

Deadman Wonderland is an odd name right? Well when you learn what the show is about, it won’t be so strange. The story starts with Ganta in class like any ordinary day. Then all of a sudden a mysterious object/person appears and destroys his classroom, killing everyone except him. Ganta is later blamed for the murders and sent to a place named Deadman Wonderland where he has to fight to stay alive. I don’t like to kill plots but I’ll give you a hint on Wonderland. What do you think of when you hear the name Wonderland? Maybe an amusement park or something right? Well Deadman Wonderland is something like an amusement park but it’s not. You see what I mean when you watch the show. (Yes that is me prodding you to watch the show.) Continue reading

Corpse Party: Tortured Souls -The Curse of Tortured Souls (Kōpusu Pātī Tortured Souls: Bōgyaku Sareta Tamashii no Jukyō)

Published by:

Corpse Party is a show I plucked off Twitter. Someone said it was their anime of the day and with a name like that, you know I had to check it out.

This show has a moe factor at first, the art makes it look like that’s what it’s going to be but that changes quickly. The class is gathered together for a end of year gathering, which turns out to also be a going away gathering since one of the friends is leaving. They perform what they think if a friendship bonding ceremony and end up being transported to a very dark situation. One that will change them all forever. Continue reading

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kaku: Outbreak (OVA)

Published by:

The town of Hinamizawa can’t seem to catch a break but it can catch an outbreak. Yes folks, I’ll be here all week 😀

Alright, enough bad jokes. Yes, we’re back in Hinamizawa with Keichii and the girls. The curse that never dies is back but this time in the form of a viral outbreak. As you know already, the people in that town aren’t the brightest and they just fall in line instead of looking for real answers. This time the crazy townpeople are after Satoko (as usual) and Keichii and Rena since outsiders are being blamed for the virus. Oyashiro of course is somehow behind it too.

The same things that made the first series controversial are here too. The pure unadulterated violence is back, not that the second series was bad but it just wasn’t the same without all the violence. This is a 50 minute romp with the same familiar characters. If you’re a fan of the series then you’ll like this one too. The only issue I have is that it needs an ending or something, just felt like it got cut off too early.
