Ange Vierge (Anju Vieruju)

Published by:

This show was from the summer 2016 season. It was one of the shows I thought of passing but once I start something I usually can’t stop because I want to know if a train wreck becomes good or a good show goes bad, etc.

The premise of the show is the fusing of 5 worlds and girls from each world must come together to stop it from happening. Each of the girls has special powers called Exceed power and they’re based on the worlds they come from. They stay on an island in the Pacific Ocean where they train and hone their capabilities. Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya

Published by:

Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya is a spinoff of Fate/Stay Night.  Fate/Stay Night was more of a fantasy battle type show but this one involves magical girls with the fantasy aspect mixed in since there is a lot of carryover from the original show. Illyasviel von Einzbern from the original series is here as the protagonist, living her life as a schoolgirl.

The 1st season of the show starts off with Ilya being given magical girl powers. Alone with her “mentor” Rin from the first series, she must learn what being a magical girl is about. She goes through the ups and downs of getting awesome and not knowing how to control it. The show has a lot of her school life mixed in too so it’s not ALL action but there is a decent amount of it. Sky Wizard’s Academy (Kūsen Madōshi Kōhosei no Kyōkan)

Published by:

This is a show from summer 2015 which started off like your typical ecchi. A guy runs into a girl and ends up seeing skin or panties or lands in an awkward situation with the usually most tsundere character of the cast and this was no different. But the show is much more than just ecchiness, it really didn’t have that much ecchi.

In Sky Wizard’s Academy, humanity was driven to the brink of extinction by magical armored insects and now live in floating cities. What defends these floating cities are wizards who can combat this menace. There is an academy located on Misutogan where our story takes place. Kanata Age is the former elite of a special team that protects Misutogan but now he is known as a traitor and to stick it to him, he’s given the role of instructor of a group of misfits who have been defeated over and over. Kanata’s job is to get them to work together and become a competent team which is much harder than expected due to the personality clashes. Continue reading

Yuki Yuna is a Hero (Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de Aru)

Published by:

The cover art is so misleading on this show. While they are schoolgirls, there is a lot more to this show than that. The story takes place in Shikoku, an island of Japan in the distant future. Though if you read previews you will notice it says the year 300 but it’s in another era. Yuna and her friends Mimori, Fu and Itsuki are members of a ‘Hero Club’ at Sanshu Middle School where they help people with small tasks like finding cats, etc. One day the Hero Club is caught in a burst of light and transported to a forest where they encounter these creatures called Vertex which are out to destroy the Shinju, a deity that protects humanity. Yuna and her friends are transformed into magical girl heroes to save the Shinju and the world. But there is more to the story than that so, tune in. Continue reading

If You’re a Sorceror, Eat Miso! (Mahou Tsukai Nara Miso wo Kue!)

Published by:

Mahou Tsukai Nara Miso wo Kue! (If You’re a Sorceror, Eat Miso!) is based on a light novel series. Kodansha greenlit this 12 minute OVA for the book that won a few light novel awards. Being that it’s only 12 minutes, there isn’t too much I can say about it without destroying the whole premise.

The story takes place in a world where the existence of magic has been known for over a century, as a power that might rival science. The discovery of MISO (Material of an Impediment to the Sorceror’s Orders) made magic into a technique that can be raised and not just a special power. One day Shoya Hacchoya is in his apartment eating miso soup and a magical princess comes flying through the window. She’s the princess of Majieeru which happens to be the birthplace of magic.

Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers (Rokka no Yuusha)

Published by:

Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers. I can’t believe I almost passed on this show because the name. I didn’t know anything about it until I watched the first episode. Braves of the Six Flowers doesn’t exactly sound like a fantasy adventure show but it really is. There is actually a meaning behind the name though.

The premise of the show is actually pretty simple though the show doesn’t make it seem that way. When the Majin wakes up from the depths of darkness, a deity of fate selects six heroes and gives them the power to save the world. A kid named Adlet who proclaims that he’s the strongest man in the world has been selected and he starts on a quest to get the six together. The problem with that is that there are more than six and they have to find out who the imposter is. Continue reading
