Strain: Strategic Armored Infantry (Soukou no Strain)

Published by:

Strain: Strategic Armored Infantry is a more mecha and less filler except for one episode.

In the distant future, mankind is divided into 2 factions called Union and Deague. Both have military might, the Union uses manned crafts known as Strain and the Deague use unmanned Tumors. Ralph Werec who was 16 at the time, left his little sister behind to become a Union pilot. He said his final farewell since he was going on a mission that would take him 130 light years away. Sara who just wanted to be with her brother, vowed t become a pilot too and find him some day. Years later, Sara became a pilot and ended up in a fight with a Deague assault force. During this assault Sara learned that the leader of this assault is her brother Ralph. In order to find out why he turned his back on the Union and figure out what he’s after, she goes after him through even means necessary, even after losing her Strain (you only get one so if you lose it then you’re done). Mazinkaizer SKL (Majinkaizā SKL)

Published by:

Mazinkaizer is a 3 part OVA so they do leave out a little background and drop you right into the action. There are 3 factions fighting for dominance of Machine Island, where all 3 are currently occupying. It’s an island prison that is isolated from the rest of the world. To make sure of this fact, a “Gravity Prison” was formed and only machines created by the worldwide government can enter the area. The 3 factions are allowed to use the resources of the island to create robots and machinery for their armies.

Where the show kicks in is where there are 66 hours left to prevent the Gravity Prison from exploding. The Gravity Prison is in an unstable state and will explode, destroying the Earth and human life. Each if the 3 factions controls part of the mechanism that controls the Prison. The WSO, knowing the danger of the Prison remaining in it’s current state sends in the Skull Force. Skull Force has 2 squads and one of those squads is a 2 member unit known as the Death Caprice Squad and they pilot a Mazinger known as Mazinkaizer SKL. Continue reading

Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt (Kidō Senshi Gandamu Sandāboruto)

Published by:

By now, most of you reading my ramblings have heard about or seen Thunderbolt. It looks like it’s going to be a 4 episode ONA type thing created by Sunrise. To run another Gundam while Iron Blooded Orphans is still on does seem a bit odd but it’s what they’re doing. I’m not sure how often the episodes will be released but will check on that. Each episode will be available for online purchase after airing. No other plans have been announced for the series yet but I’d love to see this expanded on because after that first episode, it doesn’t seem like enough to tell a full story. Maybe it’s an ONA to get funding for a full season.

While it’s a web animation, it’s very cleanly drawn and animated. Everything in the show is hand drawn, no CGI or fancy ass tricks. The first episode is 15 minutes of engaging art, a great jazz soundtrack and lots of brutality. Definitely an old school Gundam feel to this show. If you’re a Gundam fan then to place where it is in the timeline, it’s part of the ‘Universal Century’ during the ‘One Year War’.  I know I’m waiting for the next episode, you probably will be too after watching this.

Gurren Lagann (Tengen Toppa Guren Ragan)

Published by:

Gurren Lagaan is a show that you’ve probably heard of, if you haven’t seen it yet. But if you haven’t seen it yet then why not? Stop staring at this blog and go watch it. Ok, don’t stop staring at this blog but go watch the show.

The story is about a far off future, one where mankind was pushed underground, living in caves and they don’t know about the world above, the sky, the stars and everything else.

There is a small village named Jiha where Simon works as a differ and discovers a strange glowing object during a work excavation. This object will be a precursor to some of the events that will be coming. Simon meets Kamina, a brash and passionate teenager and they form the Gurren Brigade. A brigade created to break through the cave ceiling and see the world outside which many don’t even believe exists anymore. They meet a lot of people along the way, including Yoko. A girl who carries a big frikkin gun and you’ve probably seen a lot of her in other media. What they see when they make it out of the caves is only the beginning of this tale.  Continue reading

Aldnoah Zero (Arudonoa Zero)

Published by:

If it’s mecha then I may have seen it once or twice, though I’m sure there is a series or two I missed. Aldnoah Zero falls into that category of being watched a few times. I saw the subbed version and then watched the dubbed first season and of course I couldn’t stop there so I watched the second season again too though it’s not dubbed yet.

So that you have a little back story, on 1972, an ancient alien hypergate was discovered on the moon. Using this hypergate, humanity began to migrate to Mars and settle there. These settlers discovered advanced technologies and claimed Mars and it’s tech for themselves, thus, the Vers Empire is born.

The Vers Empire decided to go to war with Earth in 1999. A battle on the moon’s surface caused the hypergate to explode. This shattered the moon and scattered the remnants into a debris belt. The remnants of the Vers Imperial Army built several massive space stations within the debris belt and a ceasefire was established. 15 years later in 2014, an attack on the Vers princess during a peace mission caused the Vers army to launch a new attack on Earth with the intention of conquering the planet. Voices of a Distant Star (Hoshi no Koe)

Published by:

Voices of a Distant Star is a long distance love letter created by one man and a Macintosh computer. Yes you read that right, one man and a Macintosh using 2D and 3D animation.

The show is set in 2046, after they discover ruins on Mars.  There is a planned space expedition for 2047 and Mikako is selected to be on the voyage while Noboru will be entering high school. They continue to communicate with each other but as Mikako’s unit moves further from Earth, the messages take longer and longer to reach Noboru. First it takes months and then years to reach the Earth. I don’t want to give away the rest since it’s less than 30 minutes and I would kill the plot completely. Continue reading

Steel Angel Kurumi

Published by:

Steel Angel Kurumi is one I watched long ago, I remembered liking the show so I watched it again. Kurumi is a character that you don’t forget about. She’s goofy, loveable and overbearing all at the same time.

The show takes place in the 1920s, a time of war across the world. But the story of Nakahito and Kurumi has a much more innocent beginning. Nakahito was pressured by his friends to go into a house that was rumored to belong to a mad scientist. While in the house, he came across a very lifelike doll but she was inanimate at the time. This doll is Kurumi. The Japanese army attacks the house while Nakahito’s in there and during the attack, the doll fell over. Nakahito tries to protect the doll in the attack and ends up kissing her which brings her to life. What Nakahito didn’t know is that the army is after Kurumi which leads to their various adventures. Accel World

Published by:

Yes Accel World is short for Acceleration World but that would sound kind of weird. I remembered watching it but didn’t have enough to make a post on it. Then @icebergluffy posted this debate question on Twitter and someone mentioned that people didn’t check for Accel World because the overweight main character. Though his reason and mine differ on that character, it got me to watch it again.

Accel World is about another “world”. It’s like a game within a game when you’re watching the show. They already have avatars and such on a school network and then Haru is introduced to Brain Burst by a girl who’s been watching him and wants to take him under her wing. In Brain Burst your character is based on your fears, desires and self loathing (sounds weird right?) Brain Burst is also where the accelerated world takes place. In the accelerated world, time moves at a fast pace but on the outside it might only be a few minutes. The skills from there can be used in realtime though, where some people use it to gain an advantage at school or even to save someone’s life. Continue reading

Tenchi Muyo! War on Geminar (Isekai no Seikishi Monogatari)

Published by:

As I continue my journey through the Tenchi Universe, we have War on Geminar. I actually watched this one first by mistake because the site I use had them out of order but this story takes place 15 years after the events in Tenchi Muyo! GXP. If you’ve seen Photon then you’ll notice some similarities and names being shared between the 2 series, Photon was also created by Masaki Kajishima.

Kenshi is brought to another world, known as Geminar. In Geminar, things are handled in a very violent fashion, they use machines which are known as Sacred Mechanoids. The Mechanoids are humanoid exoskeletal weapons they were discovered in ancient ruins and developed over time. Kenshi who is not violent in nature refused to participate in an assassination of the princess Lashara and was captured. Continue reading

Robot Girls Z

Published by:

I’m going to cover Toei Robot Girls OVA, Robot Girls Z, Robot Girls Z+ (current season) and Robot Girls Z Specials in one page.

I don’t know how I didn’t notice the show at first glance. A few months ago Robot Girls Z+ started and I was looking at it saying “they look familiar”. Well duh they should have, I saw the OVA and I used to watch the original shows that the girls were based on.

The girls are dressed as robots from the Toei catalog. Team Z is the personification of robots from the Mazinger Z franchise: Mazinger Z (Z-chan), Great Mazinger (Gai-chan) and UFO Robot Grendizer (Grenda-chan). Continue reading
