Strain: Strategic Armored Infantry (Soukou no Strain)

Published by:

Strain: Strategic Armored Infantry is a more mecha and less filler except for one episode.

In the distant future, mankind is divided into 2 factions called Union and Deague. Both have military might, the Union uses manned crafts known as Strain and the Deague use unmanned Tumors. Ralph Werec who was 16 at the time, left his little sister behind to become a Union pilot. He said his final farewell since he was going on a mission that would take him 130 light years away. Sara who just wanted to be with her brother, vowed t become a pilot too and find him some day. Years later, Sara became a pilot and ended up in a fight with a Deague assault force. During this assault Sara learned that the leader of this assault is her brother Ralph. In order to find out why he turned his back on the Union and figure out what he’s after, she goes after him through even means necessary, even after losing her Strain (you only get one so if you lose it then you’re done). Upotte!!

Published by:

While looking for something to watch, that wasn’t too long, I came across Upotte!! I skipped this one when it was out because it seemed like it would be moe with guns. While it does have some cuteness, it’s not about cute girls doing cute things. They don’t look super cutesy like in Is This Order a Rabbit? or Girls und Panzer which would probably be a show closer in themes since they’re both military.

Upotte takes place at Seishou Academy, a school where the students are anthropomorphized guns that are training to become useful weapons and get their own personal serviceman. The school is broken up into groups: elementary school (sub-machine guns), middle school (assault rifles), and high school (Battle rifles/sniper rifles). The girls are able to manifest their guns and use them, using live ammo. They’re training to hit their targets with accuracy like someone who trains to use guns would do. This is all foreign to the new human teacher Genkoku who first has to get used to the girls being guns and then the battles they go through. Continue reading

Steel Angel Kurumi

Published by:

Steel Angel Kurumi is one I watched long ago, I remembered liking the show so I watched it again. Kurumi is a character that you don’t forget about. She’s goofy, loveable and overbearing all at the same time.

The show takes place in the 1920s, a time of war across the world. But the story of Nakahito and Kurumi has a much more innocent beginning. Nakahito was pressured by his friends to go into a house that was rumored to belong to a mad scientist. While in the house, he came across a very lifelike doll but she was inanimate at the time. This doll is Kurumi. The Japanese army attacks the house while Nakahito’s in there and during the attack, the doll fell over. Nakahito tries to protect the doll in the attack and ends up kissing her which brings her to life. What Nakahito didn’t know is that the army is after Kurumi which leads to their various adventures. Sabagebu!

Published by:

Now you’re probably looking at the cover pic and thinking it’s just a generic moe show, well except for the gun. While they do look cute and all that, this show actually has blood and action like this:

Momoka is a middle school girl (or is it high school?) who is dragged into joining one of the oddest clubs at her school, the Survival Game Club. This club is under the leadership of the mercurial Miou and it’s a club that does a lot of paramilitary training. After being dragged and coerced into joining, Momoka has to learn the ropes quickly. Did your airsoft gun battles ever go like this?

One aspect of the show that is done well is the characters. When you see pink or blue hair, you expect them to follow tropes but here you have a break from that. This show doesn’t take itself seriously and it shows in the characters. Momoka is a hot pink which you would think means she’s sweet, caring and all that but she’s a straight up jerk. Martian Successor Nadesico (Kidou Senkan Nadesico)

Published by:

It is the year 2196 and the Earth is at war with a race of aliens called the Jovian Lizards. The Nadesico is a battleship created by the Nergal company. The ship is a powerful battleship that protects the galaxy but it’s manned by a crew of oddballs. They’re actually experts in their fields but have some serious personality disorders.

The crew takes on several jobs where they have to launch their mecha fighters known as Aestivalis. The Aestivalis are like the enforcers and first line of defense. They have more experienced pilots but Akito, a novice and backup pilot has to fight and learn how to, at the same time which leads to some interesting situations. He’d rather cook and watch an anime called Gekiganger 3 than fight the war. What Akito doesn’t know, since he can’t get answers from anyone, is that he is one of the most powerful weapons that the Nadesico has. Continue reading
