Choas; Head

Published by:

Those eyes, who’s are they…you may have heard this line before, that’s because Chaos;Head is in a line of shows that all use that line. Stein’s; Gate, Robotics’ Note and I’m sure Stein’s; Gate 0 and Chais; Child will use that line too.

Chaos; Head takes place in 2008 (yes it’s relevant to the 3 shows and where they fall in the timeline). Takumi is a high school student and an extreme otaku who is living in an unconventional way, in a shipping container with a 2D delusion from hs head as his main companion. One day he hears about murders known as “New Gen murders” but he dismisses it because it doesn’t concern him, or so he thought. He is mysteriously pulled into the center of the occurrences which he believes to be delusions but soon his delusions and reality clash and now he has to figure out what’s going on before his world comes to a halt. School Live! (Gakkō Gurashi!)

Published by:

I was passing on this show until someone said it had a Higurashi vibe and Higurashi is a show that I liked. I was planning to watch most of the summer season anyway since I had a lot of free time but this might have gotten pushed back if someone didn’t say that.

Yuki Takeya is a bright cheery girl who loves school in every way imaginable. Yuki is part of the School Living Club at her high school with Kurumi, Yuri, Miki and a teacher who is affectionately known as Megu-nee though she repeatedly asks them not to call her that since she is their their and they should be calling her sensei. Yuki seeks out fun things to do at school while they’re ‘living’ there. The other girls work hard to keep her safe because the reality of it all is that they’re seemingly the sole survivors of a zombie outbreak. Continue reading

Danganronpa the Animation

Published by:

Danganronpa, a name that a lot of people know from visual novels. I have never touched visual novels so I wasn’t familiar with it but 16 people locked in a classroom/school who have to kill each other? What’s not to like, right?

16 students get locked in a school by an anonymous figure with one goal. Survive. The students are told that only one of them gets to survive and everyone else dies. These students aren’t killers and don’t want to kill each other so it makes for a philosophical debate. To kill or not to kill. Continue reading

Alice in Borderland (Imawa no Kuni no Alice)

Published by:

Alice in Borderland starts with a group of high school kids about to leave high school. Alice (yes it’s his name) is trying to avoid thinking about the future, so are his friends Karube and Chota. One night when they’re together they see a bright explosion in the sky and find themselves transported to a desolate territory.

This desolate new land they find themselves in is no ordinary place, as they eventually find out. In this new world, they are forced to play games of survival. Not just ordinary and not just survival as in last man standing. This is life or death. If they get hurt in the game, they are hurt for real, if they die in the game…you get the picture. Will they survive long enough to get to the end of the game? Will there be hard choices they have to make? I can tell you this, the show is pretty brutal. Continue reading

Paranoia Agent (Mousou Dairinin)

Published by:

Paranoia Agent is one that I picked up because the cover image and genre. If it’s mystery, I’m probably checking it out. Now that’s not to say that all mystery is good but I will most likely check them out.

In Musashino, Tokyo, a juvenile serial assailant who was nicknamed “Lil’ Slugger” has been terrorizing the city. Lil’ Slugger is a kid who goes around with a gold bat and wears gold skates, he bashes people with the bat for a myriad of reasons. The show revolves around those who have been affected by Lil’ Slugger, whether it was because of direct attacks or stories they heard. There are a pair of detectives on the case and one “detective” who seems to be a porn producer more than another detective. As the show goes on and pieces fall into place, it gets a bit more interesting. Continue reading

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Gaiden Nekogoroshi-hen (The Cat Killing Chapter)

Published by:

Before you run away in horror, there are no cats getting killed. You know the old saying “curiosity killed the cat”? It’s about killing curiosity not cats. The name of it is probably why this episode never came to the US.

This has the main characters playing cards as usual but the penalty game gets taken up a notch. instead of Keiichi wearing a girlie costume, EVERYONE is wearing something because they all lost in some form. As they parade through town they come to a fork in the road and take the path to an abandoned town. The ones who lived in Hinamizawa start telling stories that they knew about the town and that’s pretty much how things go for the whole episode. Continue reading

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei (When They Cry Gratitude)

Published by:

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei gets back to the psychological and mysterious line of Higurashi shows. Rei keeps the muystery part without all the slashing.

The story starts where the first two series left off. As usual, everything is based around Rika and Rika has some decisions to make. A new event sends Rika into “another world” which is more of a soul searching event for her. You’ll notice some notable characters missing but it all plays into the storyline. Don’t worry, everyone is present in one form or another once you get past the first episode which is typical OVA stuff. You can probably ignore the fifth one too, more comedy OVA type stuff. Holy Knight (Hōrī Naito)

Published by:

Holy Knight is another OVA special that I’d like to see get a full adaptation. It’s only 2 episodes and it barely begins to tell the story of Holy Knight.

This story centers around a boy named Mizumura who goes to a missionary school in Tokyo. He’s accompanied by a childhood friend who is in love with him but seems she has never told him. His simple life changes when a beautiful girl named Lilith suddenly transfers into his school and starts making advances towards him.

Mizumura later discovers that he is actually a vampire hunter and the successor of the Romyuarudo lineage. While Lilith is a vampire who is after him and his “seed”. Continue reading

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kaku: Outbreak (OVA)

Published by:

The town of Hinamizawa can’t seem to catch a break but it can catch an outbreak. Yes folks, I’ll be here all week 😀

Alright, enough bad jokes. Yes, we’re back in Hinamizawa with Keichii and the girls. The curse that never dies is back but this time in the form of a viral outbreak. As you know already, the people in that town aren’t the brightest and they just fall in line instead of looking for real answers. This time the crazy townpeople are after Satoko (as usual) and Keichii and Rena since outsiders are being blamed for the virus. Oyashiro of course is somehow behind it too.

The same things that made the first series controversial are here too. The pure unadulterated violence is back, not that the second series was bad but it just wasn’t the same without all the violence. This is a 50 minute romp with the same familiar characters. If you’re a fan of the series then you’ll like this one too. The only issue I have is that it needs an ending or something, just felt like it got cut off too early.

Btooom!

Published by:

Btooom! is an action anime with psychological twists. Ryouta, the main character is one of the world’s top players of the game Btooom! One day he wakes up and he’s been transported to an island which he doesn’t remember how or why he got there. What Ryouta doesn’t realize is that he was transported into a real life version of his favorite game.

When it comes to these type of shows, you’re not going to get much character development. The main focus is on the main characters and their partners usually and the same applies here. How much development do you need when the world or your life is on the line? The main characters do make the show interesting. The last thing you need in a show like this is an unlikable main character. Continue reading
