The story of TokyoESP starts with Rinka, a poor high school girl who lives with her father. One day on her way home from school, she chases a flying penguin to the top of Tokyo Tower. Then a strange phenomenon occurs. She sees flying goldfish and one of them ends up going through her body, giving her supernatural powers. The power to slip through solid objects. Continue readingby
Those eyes, who’s are they…you may have heard this line before, that’s because Chaos;Head is in a line of shows that all use that line. Stein’s; Gate, Robotics’ Note and I’m sure Stein’s; Gate 0 and Chais; Child will use that line too.
Chaos; Head takes place in 2008 (yes it’s relevant to the 3 shows and where they fall in the timeline). Takumi is a high school student and an extreme otaku who is living in an unconventional way, in a shipping container with a 2D delusion from hs head as his main companion. One day he hears about murders known as “New Gen murders” but he dismisses it because it doesn’t concern him, or so he thought. He is mysteriously pulled into the center of the occurrences which he believes to be delusions but soon his delusions and reality clash and now he has to figure out what’s going on before his world comes to a halt. Strain: Strategic Armored Infantry is a more mecha and less filler except for one episode.
In the distant future, mankind is divided into 2 factions called Union and Deague. Both have military might, the Union uses manned crafts known as Strain and the Deague use unmanned Tumors. Ralph Werec who was 16 at the time, left his little sister behind to become a Union pilot. He said his final farewell since he was going on a mission that would take him 130 light years away. Sara who just wanted to be with her brother, vowed t become a pilot too and find him some day. Years later, Sara became a pilot and ended up in a fight with a Deague assault force. During this assault Sara learned that the leader of this assault is her brother Ralph. In order to find out why he turned his back on the Union and figure out what he’s after, she goes after him through even means necessary, even after losing her Strain (you only get one so if you lose it then you’re done). I’m sure some of you have been waiting for the Dimension W dub version. Well guess what? It’s going straight to Toonami. This is a first for broadcast dubs to air while the show is still on in Japan. It won’t even be available on Funimation.com until 2 weeks after it airs. I guess you can say Space Dandy may be a first since it was shown dubbed and subbed at the same time but it was before Funimation started doing broadcast dubs. Funimation is on the production committee for the show and it seems like they went in big time on Dimension W. I like the show and hope it gets more than a 12 episode run because so far it looks like something that needs more than 12 to tell the story.
Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin is an origin story of the Red Comet. It delves into the past of Casval Rem Deikun and Artesia Som Deikun. It goes from their childhood to the time that Casval leaves to later become the Red Comet. For those trying to keep up with the Gundam universe, it takes place before the One Year War.
Don’t pick this one up for action scenes. There are a few and the usual explosions and people dying but it’s more of the backstory part of their journey through their turbulent lives. It can be slow at times but it can’t all be action 100% of the time. You get to watch Casval and Artesia grow up while trying to survive the usual political issues that occur in Gundam series. Burn Up W takes place some time after Burn Up but I don’t recall them mentioning a year or anything. The show is back but with an all new cast of characters and a few vintage characters.
Burn Up W is a 4 episode OVA which starts off with a ‘simple’ crime then moves onto a 2 episode crime. But all 4 episodes are tied into each other in some way so it’s not like 4 separate missions. A new crime syndicate is trying to take over Policetown and Maki with her new team are trying to stop them. Continue readingby
Burn Up is a cop comedy similar to a buddy cop movie like Lethal Weapon and Bad Boys. The only difference is a female team of cops is the lead.
Burn Up is a one hour OVA about three cops, though it seems like two cops and an assistant. Maki, Reimi and Yuka definitely don’t look like cops since they’re stuck on desk duty and they’re actually traffic patrol cops. Things change when Yuka gets kidnapped by a white slave trade operation and Maki and Reimi jump in to action in their skin tight armor and tanks. Continue readingby
Needless is a show I bypassed when it came out but decided to give it a chance recently. Not even sure why I bypassed it before since dystopian future type of stuff usually draws me in.
The story takes place in a future where a Third World War has taken place. A war that has brought worldwide chaos and also creates room for a new species known as Needless. Needless are humans who have contracted a ‘disease’ that allows them to wield new powers that mankind could only dream of. They’re able to control gravity, telekenesis, adapting, elementals and several other powers that you only see in comic books. Continue readingby
Onegai Teacher and Onegai Twins has a lot of carryover in characters. In both series, the main protagonist is put in a situation which is seemingly impossible but of course he figures out what he has to do. It is TV afterall and not real life where things never go as planned.
In Onegai Teacher, a boy with an issue of blacking out sees an alien landing but of course, he blacks out so he doesn’t believe it’s real. Then the next day he’s at school and the alien that he saw land is hs new homeroom teacher. Through a series of events, he learns of her origin and vows to protect her in any way he can. What he desn’t know is that it’s going to come in the form of marriage. The two get married and have to keep things a secret from everyone so that she doesn’t lose her job as a teacher. There are other consequences but her being his teacher and wife are their main worries. Can they keep the secret with so many things getting in the way? Continue readingby
Mazinkaizer is a 3 part OVA so they do leave out a little background and drop you right into the action. There are 3 factions fighting for dominance of Machine Island, where all 3 are currently occupying. It’s an island prison that is isolated from the rest of the world. To make sure of this fact, a “Gravity Prison” was formed and only machines created by the worldwide government can enter the area. The 3 factions are allowed to use the resources of the island to create robots and machinery for their armies.
Where the show kicks in is where there are 66 hours left to prevent the Gravity Prison from exploding. The Gravity Prison is in an unstable state and will explode, destroying the Earth and human life. Each if the 3 factions controls part of the mechanism that controls the Prison. The WSO, knowing the danger of the Prison remaining in it’s current state sends in the Skull Force. Skull Force has 2 squads and one of those squads is a 2 member unit known as the Death Caprice Squad and they pilot a Mazinger known as Mazinkaizer SKL. Continue readingby
