Strain: Strategic Armored Infantry (Soukou no Strain)

Published by:

Strain: Strategic Armored Infantry is a more mecha and less filler except for one episode.

In the distant future, mankind is divided into 2 factions called Union and Deague. Both have military might, the Union uses manned crafts known as Strain and the Deague use unmanned Tumors. Ralph Werec who was 16 at the time, left his little sister behind to become a Union pilot. He said his final farewell since he was going on a mission that would take him 130 light years away. Sara who just wanted to be with her brother, vowed t become a pilot too and find him some day. Years later, Sara became a pilot and ended up in a fight with a Deague assault force. During this assault Sara learned that the leader of this assault is her brother Ralph. In order to find out why he turned his back on the Union and figure out what he’s after, she goes after him through even means necessary, even after losing her Strain (you only get one so if you lose it then you’re done). Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin

Published by:

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin is an origin story of the Red Comet. It delves into the past of Casval Rem Deikun and Artesia Som Deikun. It goes from their childhood to the time that Casval leaves to later become the Red Comet. For those trying to keep up with the Gundam universe, it takes place before the One Year War.

Don’t pick this one up for action scenes. There are a few and the usual explosions and people dying but it’s more of the backstory part of their journey through their turbulent lives. It can be slow at times but it can’t all be action 100% of the time. You get to watch Casval and Artesia grow up while trying to survive the usual political issues that occur in Gundam series. Sol Bianca: The Legacy

Published by:

Sol Bianca: The Legacy is a miniseries from 1999. It’s loosely based on the original Sol Bianca. As a matter of fact, it looks like it takes place BEFORE the original. It’s a different storyline from the original so don’t expect any open plotlines to be closed or anything like that if you were waiting for it.

The setting for the show is thousands of years in the future. A future where mankind has abandoned Earth. The ladies of Sol Bianca are up to their usual pirating antics until one day a young girl stows away on the ship (how is the Sol Bianca always a place for stowaways). This event leads the Sol Bianca on a quest to find the girl’s parents and also discover the lost treasures of Earth, the planet left behind. Continue reading

Sol Bianca (Sorubianka)

Published by:

Sol Bianca is a 2 part OVA from the early 90s. The story is about 5 female space pirates who obviously go around pirating. They pilot a ship named the Sol Bianca, a spaceship that has a higher level of tech than all the others in the galaxy. While going on missions they run into all sorts of enemies, legal and illegal.

While they are pirates these women do have compassion. In the first episode they have a stowaway and they go on a mission for him to find his parents though it’s only because they can search for a treasure along the way. The second episode is a straight pirate mission. Continue reading

Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki (Tenchi Muyō! Ryōōki)

Published by:

This is where it all started for the Tenchi series. Ryo-Ohki gives you the background for a lot of the future Tenchi series references. There are even other shows that take cues from Tenchi and vice versa. When it comes to harem shows in space, the Tenchi series is near the top.

Ryo-Ohki starts with a Tenchi who leads a quiet life helping his grandfather at the temple. His life would have remained quiet if he didn’t release a space pirate named Ryoko from her 700 year old prison. Ryoko ends up making Tenchi’s life a lot more interesting but she is only the beginning. An alien princess, another alien girl, a ditzy galaxy police agent and an insane scientist all join the party. Each of these females is after Tenchi for their own wants and desires and fight each other over him.

The madness doesn’t stop there Continue reading

Tenchi Muyo! GXP

Published by:

Tenchi Muyo! GXP is a different direction from the earlier Tenchi series Ryo-Ohki, Universe and Tokyo, while the others are based on the continuity of Ryo-Ohki, GXP is a parallel series. Tenchi is not your main character but he does make an appearance, along with some of the others. Now it’s not so different that there not a kid being chased by a bunch of beautiful women, without that, it’s not a Tenchi series. It’s just that there is a different main character and he’s a little ‘different’.

The story revolves around Seina who seems to be the world’s unluckiest person. He’s so unlucky that he literally stumbled across a GXP recruiter who was there for Tenchi and he got taken instead. Seina’s luck is so bad that they use him for a decoy to find space pirates. Luckily for Seina there are people who seem to cancel out his bad luck, the recruiter Kaunaq, his childhood friend Kiriko, a space pirate named Ryoko and a witch named Neiju. With the help of these 4 women, Seina is able to pilot some of the most powerful ships in the Tenchi universe to try to defeat the Barta pirates. While the women are trying to defeat each other and capture Seina’s heart. Continue reading

Martian Successor Nadesico (Kidou Senkan Nadesico)

Published by:

It is the year 2196 and the Earth is at war with a race of aliens called the Jovian Lizards. The Nadesico is a battleship created by the Nergal company. The ship is a powerful battleship that protects the galaxy but it’s manned by a crew of oddballs. They’re actually experts in their fields but have some serious personality disorders.

The crew takes on several jobs where they have to launch their mecha fighters known as Aestivalis. The Aestivalis are like the enforcers and first line of defense. They have more experienced pilots but Akito, a novice and backup pilot has to fight and learn how to, at the same time which leads to some interesting situations. He’d rather cook and watch an anime called Gekiganger 3 than fight the war. What Akito doesn’t know, since he can’t get answers from anyone, is that he is one of the most powerful weapons that the Nadesico has. Continue reading
