Furumapura

Published by:

Furumapura is another manga by Cool Kyoushinsha. (Yes I like his work dammit)

It’s a simple 4 koma about high school girls who meet by chance. Kyou is a loud, overbearing kind of girl who seems to have an Irish accent or probably British since they love the Brits but it seems more Irish to me (at least that’s how the English version I read, made it seem). While Makoto is a quiet girl who uses signs to talk but it’s not with words. These signs are numbered 1-10 as if it was a rating system. Kyou has to figure out what the numbers mean and she pretty much carries the book since Makoto does not talk at all, just uses the signs. Continue reading

Ga-Rei: Zero

The show is about the Japanese Ministry of Defense and their anti-paranormal special forces called the Supernatural Disaster Prevention Office. They’re tasked with protecting Japan from supernatural and paranormal events. Of course there are missions that go awry and you’re dropped right into the middle of one from the beginning of the show. Gokujo: Gokurakuin Joshikōryō Monogatari (Extreme Woman. The Tales of Gokurakuin Girls School Dorm)

Published by:

The story of Gokujo is about the misadventures of Akabane Aya. She’s an cocky, self assured high school girl who is always trying to outdo everyone else in just about everything. The one thing she really overdoes it in is sex appeal, she thinks she’s like a gift from the heavens and she ends up making herself look like a fool in most cases. The school she attends is an all girl school so there is a lot of yuriness. Continue reading

Riddle Story of Devil (Akuma no Riddle)

Published by:

Riddle Story of Devil is a classroom assassination type show which takes place at Myoujou Academy, a private girls school. 13 girls are transferred into the school’s 10th year Class Black. Of the 13 girls there are 12 assassins and one who is a target. If one of the 12 assassins kills the target then they are granted a wish, whatever it may be. If they fail then they’re expelled from Class Black. One of the assassins, Tokaku Azuma start to develop feelings for the target, Haru Ichinose and becomes her protector which changes things to an 11 on 2 situation. This makes for an interesting turn of events.

Assassins and classrooms seem to make for some really good shows, at least I think so anyway. The one thing that brings it all together though is the characters. This show has a nice array of characters. The two leads are just about perfect in Japanese and English. Continue reading

Upotte!!

Published by:

While looking for something to watch, that wasn’t too long, I came across Upotte!! I skipped this one when it was out because it seemed like it would be moe with guns. While it does have some cuteness, it’s not about cute girls doing cute things. They don’t look super cutesy like in Is This Order a Rabbit? or Girls und Panzer which would probably be a show closer in themes since they’re both military.

Upotte takes place at Seishou Academy, a school where the students are anthropomorphized guns that are training to become useful weapons and get their own personal serviceman. The school is broken up into groups: elementary school (sub-machine guns), middle school (assault rifles), and high school (Battle rifles/sniper rifles). The girls are able to manifest their guns and use them, using live ammo. They’re training to hit their targets with accuracy like someone who trains to use guns would do. This is all foreign to the new human teacher Genkoku who first has to get used to the girls being guns and then the battles they go through. Continue reading

Blue Drop (Burū Doroppu)

Published by:

Blue Drop is one that came up as a random pick for me. It’s one that I passed on before but decided to give it a chance on a day that I was just sitting at home.

The manga for Blue Drop is set after the war but the anime takes place before the war. So I guess we can call this a prequel. It’s 1999 and Mari Wakatake transfers into a new school, the all girl school, Kaiho Academy. The issues for Mari start even before she transfers into the new school because all the inhabitants of the island she lived on died, she is the only survivor but has no memories from that event or anything before it.

As Mari is starting to get acquainted with a few people at school but this one girl, Hagino Senkōji, who is always calm, touches Mari’s hand and for some reason she get incensed and starts to strangle her. Continue reading

Yuru Yuri

Published by:

What can I say to describe Yuru Yuri. Cute girls doing cute things with lots of yuri undertones? Sounds about right. It’s probably a little Lucky Star mixed with Sakura Trick.

Yuru Yuri is about a group of middle school girls who have deep childhood bonds and they form an after school club. The club is just them having fun but this is where you start to see the yuri undertones. The 4 girls have friends in the student council and a few others who they interact with. Within the group there are some girls who like other girls but don’t know how to say it, some who know how to say it but get pushed away, and even some who fantasize about the other girls. But don’t expect this to go into hentai areas or anything like that. The show is very tame and it sticks mostly to the school activities, eating together, Comiket and things of that nature. When it comes to yuri action, it’s very innocent and nothing heavy. Not even sure I’d call it yuri. Continue reading

Cross Ange: Rondo of Angels and Dragons (Kurosu Anju Tenshi to Ryū no Rondo?)

Published by:

Cross Ange’s subtitle had Dragons in it so I had to check it out. There really are dragons too, lots of them. Nice.

Angelise is a princess who lives in a world with people who use Mana and those who don’t. Mana is the reason there is no war or pollution or so they’re lead to believe. Those who can’t use Mana are known as “Normas”. Those who use Mana don’t question it, they’ve been brainwashed to treat Normas as something less than human. While Normas basically live oppressed and are shipped to a place named Arzenal which is a prison for them, if they are found to lack the ability to use Mana. Continue reading

Sakura Trick

Published by:

Sakura Trick is another Crunchyroll random pick for me. Had no clue what it was about at all. Read the description and thought, okay it’s a slice of life type show. Oh it’s that and more.

Sakura Trick is about 2 girls, Yuu and Haruka who were inseparable in middle school but got separated in high school. Mind you, that this separation was still in the same classroom, just one in front of the class and one in the back. They wanted to find a way to make their friendship “special.” I’ll let you get into all that, I don’t want to ruin the surprise. Continue reading
