Tell me if you heard this one before. A transvestite, an alcoholic and a runaway girl find a baby on Christmas Eve and try to raise it. Yes, this is the premise of this show. While foraging through the trash, they stumble upon a baby and though they want to “raise it”, they do set out to find it’s parents.
Throughout the show, they each come face to face with reminders of their past by coincidence and happenstance. Does anyone ever truly become homeless by choice? Well they have to face the factors that lead to them becoming homeless. It’s not all a riches to rags story though, there are different reasons for each being homeless and it’s not all flashbacks, they actually meet some of the faces of their past.
I don’t want to say too much more about the movie because that would kill it but it’s a good movie. I don’t know if I’d call it a Christmas tale but it happens to take place on Christmas and have all the emotion and crap you’d expect from a Christmas movie. Tokyo Godfathers is probably one of those that you can put under gateway anime. It’s something that you may be able to get a non anime fan to watch. You don’t have over slick production or anime tropes and things that you have to explain. It’s a straight up story that anyone can follow.
