Gunsmith Cats is a 3 episode OVA that got the greenlight based off the popularity of it’s books. Back in the 80s and 90s you could get the money to do a short run and see if someone would pick up the show. These days you have to go to Kickstarter or something just to get one or two episodes and hope it works out.
Anyway, Gunsmith Cats is about a bounty hunter named Rally Vincent, who runs an illegal gun shop named Gunsmith Cats. She’s not alone though. Rally has a sidekick Minnie May who is a 16 year old who likes to play with explosives. There is also an information broker named Becky. One day, an ATF agent blackmails Rally and Minnie May into working for the ATF and they end up in a plot much bigger than they expected.
Watching this show today does show it’s age. You have the art deco style opening, music from 90s cop show, the art style, Rally’s bad hair. It definitely will feel like you took a step back in time if you watch it now. You can tell the show is from the 90s but it was done well for it’s time period. While there isn’t much to it since it’s only a 3 episode OVA. It was a decent hour.
