Sola

Sola is a show I picked randomly while snowed in. I had no expectations going into the show but I saw drama tags and a few others and thought it was going to be a slow meandering show but then there was another tag that caught my attention. Supernatural.

Yorito has an unexplained obsession with the sky. He loves taking pictures of the sky at different times of day. Sunsets, sunrises, the clouds and anything sky related. On one of his early morning trips to try to get pics of the sunrise he bumps into an awkward girl who seems to be fighting with a vending machine when her tomato juice gets stuck. Yorito helps the strange girl but while he has his back turned she disappears. This mysterious girl is surrounded in mystery and Yorito wants to figure out who she is.

The characters in the show are a bit formulaic but at least they stand out and don’t blend into the background. Have you seen one of the moe blob shows like Gourmet Girl Graffiti? The characters are almost interchangeable there but here you do have diversity between them. The problem is falling into the usual archetypes but the drama between them is what separates them from being too bland.

Production wise the show is pretty much just a standard show with no frills. The music and sound were pretty standard too. There wasn’t anything that really stood out to me. Nothing for me to really add here.

This show is definitely a change of pace type show. Slice of life with some drama and a bit of fighting and supernatural abilities. At first I wasn’t sure how I felt about it but a few episodes in and I had to keep watching to see what was going to go down because I did have suspicions. Though it turned out to be more than I was expecting. Not sure if I’d recommend it to anyone but if that sounds like your type of show then you will probably like it.
