Robot Girls Z

I’m going to cover Toei Robot Girls OVA, Robot Girls Z, Robot Girls Z+ (current season) and Robot Girls Z Specials in one page.

I don’t know how I didn’t notice the show at first glance. A few months ago Robot Girls Z+ started and I was looking at it saying “they look familiar”. Well duh they should have, I saw the OVA and I used to watch the original shows that the girls were based on.

The girls are dressed as robots from the Toei catalog. Team Z is the personification of robots from the Mazinger Z franchise: Mazinger Z (Z-chan), Great Mazinger (Gai-chan) and UFO Robot Grendizer (Grenda-chan). The usually perform duties around the city to promote the use of a new energy source, Photon Power. The girls fight against “Mechanical Beast”, which is a team of girls from the “Subterranean Empire” who try to steal the Photon Power. Later in the Robot Girls Z series, you get the introduction of other Robot Girls teams that compete for the spotlight.

The pilot for the show is Toei Robot Girls and it’s about 3 minutes. It’s an introduction to Team Z and Mechanical Beast. It’s rewritten for Robot Girls Z and is part of the first episode. Robot Girls Z is extended out to 10 minute episodes and that’s where the ridiculousness begins. It’s really just silly, slapstick comedy for the most part, watching Team Z kick Mechanical Beast all over the place and blow up the city just about every time. I feel sorry for the guy running Jack’s food truck and the corner store that get blown up every episode.

The Z+ shows which are currently running (4 out of 6 are already out). If you just started from Z+ then you need to go back to the beginning so you can understand what’s going on. It’s not hard to figure out but the characters will be since in the earlier shows they have their names and the voice actors names on the screen so you can get an idea of which robots they are, etc. The new shows will be based two classic “Toei Manga Matsuri” films, Great Mazinger tai Getter Robo (Great Mazinger Vs. Getter Robo) and Great Mazinger tai Getter Robo G – Kuuchuu Dai-Gekitotsu (Great Mazinger Vs. Getter Robo G – The Great Space Encounter).

Overall it’s just a short slapstick comedy type show. I wouldn’t tell someone to run and go see it but if you want a few laughs at something silly then try this series out.
