Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei (When They Cry Gratitude)

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei gets back to the psychological and mysterious line of Higurashi shows. Rei keeps the muystery part without all the slashing.

The story starts where the first two series left off. As usual, everything is based around Rika and Rika has some decisions to make. A new event sends Rika into “another world” which is more of a soul searching event for her. You’ll notice some notable characters missing but it all plays into the storyline. Don’t worry, everyone is present in one form or another once you get past the first episode which is typical OVA stuff. You can probably ignore the fifth one too, more comedy OVA type stuff.

This goes back to some of what made Higurashi good but it lacks the horror part. The art has been upgraded since the first series and the music goes back to the same type of music from the first series. To fully understand what’s going on here, you need to watch the first and second series. The first episode of this mini series is just OVA stuff and forgettable but the rest is decent. If it wasn’t Higurashi then I might say it’s nice story telling but there is a standard to live up to and no blood in Higurashi is just not right.
