Voices of a Distant Star (Hoshi no Koe)

Voices of a Distant Star is a long distance love letter created by one man and a Macintosh computer. Yes you read that right, one man and a Macintosh using 2D and 3D animation.

The show is set in 2046, after they discover ruins on Mars.  There is a planned space expedition for 2047 and Mikako is selected to be on the voyage while Noboru will be entering high school. They continue to communicate with each other but as Mikako’s unit moves further from Earth, the messages take longer and longer to reach Noboru. First it takes months and then years to reach the Earth. I don’t want to give away the rest since it’s less than 30 minutes and I would kill the plot completely.

I have to say that this 25 minute OVA is a work of art. Is it the most advanced anime? No it’s not. But it was directed and animated by a single man on a Macintosh. The voice acting was actually done by him and his wife. If you watch this show then watch the Japanese version without all the added dialogue. It gives the show so much more emotion with less dialogue. I’m grading this purely from a creative standpoint and it also gets the emotion across that he was aiming for. It’s a powerful piece of art. In 25 minutes, he did more storytelling than some need 25 episodes.
